At the end of the 1980s Eleanore Riese is admitted to a psychiatric clinic in San Francisco. Despite her neuropathy she realizes that the way patients are treated and forced to take their medicine is not legitimate. The lawyer Colette Hughes (Vera Farmiga) gets involved to stand up for the right of physical self-determination in court.
